Sports is fun?

While thinking about ways the Tea Party candidates could get the nomination, I ran across a few things in sports that struck me strange
-- Yankees' Mariano Rivera goes over 600 saves, and everyone bows at his feet. Yes he was a great reliever, and maybe the best of all time. But Trevor Hoffman has just as many (actually 1 more right now) and for a team that normally was much worse. But he did it in San Diego, so there's no way he could be just as good, is there?
-- Have two 0-1 NFL teams that had been in the play-offs the year before been thrown under the bus any faster than the Chiefs and the Colts? I doubt it, but it doesn't look good for either team. And on that note-
-- The clamor has already started for Coach Haley to be fired here in Kansas City after this year. But with all the injuries and releases and the lock-out, is this really fair? A 2 or 3 year extension would be more likely, and much more fair, unless the team truly tanks. But a young, energetic offensive coordinator signed after the year? That would make sense, and keep the Chiefs fans happy. In other words, don't look for it, but for a re-tread from the Parcell or Belicheck tree is very likely.
-- The Royals have 4 straight and are out of the cellar. Why? The pitchers have allowed just 5 runs in the those games. Once again, look for the Royals to trade a couple of AAA players or Cabrera for starting pitching. But don't be surprised if no blockbuster trades are made, as the pipeline has almost a half-dozen pitchers a year or two away. And on that note-
-- The Royals brought up 15 rookies, including their starting first, second and third basemen, and 4 starter sometime this year! So how good can the minor leagues be this year? The 3 top teams made the play-offs, and Omaha, the AAA team, is playing in the finals. The difference in the Royals now and 10 to 15 years ago is that they sign the best talent for their minor leagues, and try to sign all their draft picks. For years, the Royals scrimped on signings. If they keep this strategy, they'll be competitive for years to come.
-- Bobby Bowden, Floris State's former football coach, announced yesterday that he is in remission for cancer. Listen to his interview (It's on you-tube) and you'll see why he was a great recruiter and coach. Easy-going, out-going and truthful. I watched him on  TV when I was stationed in Florida, and he hasn't changed a bit. And on that note-
-- Oklahoma is very close to leaving The Big 12 and breaking it apart for good. There has been a college conference that has represented the the heartland of America, and only the heartland, the area between the Mississippi River and the Rockies, since 1921. If the Big 12 disbands, and all the schools go to conferences that are based on either the east or west coast, this will just confirm that this area is just a fly-over part of America. And that leads to-
-- Oklahoma is playing Florida State this Saturday. Do I need any other reason to root for Bobby Bowden's old school?
